AUSTRALIA

How beautiful Australia is and how far it is.

I love Australia; it is like a big island in nowhere. I know that Australia was an English colony and when English jails were full they sent prisoners to Australian jails. By the other way, many people emigrated to Australia during the 20th century.

Australia has two big cities. Sydney is the biggest; it is the most famous too. But it is not country’s capital.

Australia is so big that there is a desert; there are some rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef.

There are some animals that only live in Australia, for example: kangaroos and koala bears. Kangaroos are mammals, they have powerful back legs and they were jumping everywhere. Koalas are little bears, are mammals too and they spent a lot of time of their lives climbing trees.
Besides, Australia has the world older cricket team and it has famous personalities too. Some writers, actors, actress and singers are from Australia.

Mel Gibson is a famous Australian actor. He plays “Lethal weapon”, “Brave heart”, “Signs”, “Christ Passion” and “The patriot”.

Hugh Jackman is another Australian actor, is well known because he is the main character of “X-men”.

Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett are Australian actress. Nicole Kidman is very famous because she has filmed many movies in Hollywood.

To finish with, we have to name Kylie Minogue. Kylie is one of the most famous pop singer in the world.

GUY FAWKES AND THE GUNPOWDER PLOT

1605, Catholics were not happy with King James I because he ordered to all catholic priest to leave England. So, they decided to kill the King and all people around him. The best place and the best moment to did it was when King James I inaugurate the Parliament session.

Guy Fawkes was one of the plotters; he managed to rent a house near the Houses of Parliament and to take sixteen barrels of gunpowder to Houses of Parliament cellars.

But there was a problem. Plotters felt bad about the fact that some of the people who will be in the Parliament were Catholics. So they decided to write an anonymous letter advising them to stay away from Parliament.

The letter was shown to the authorities and guards searched all the cellars and they captured Guy Fawkes.

Guy Fawkes was tortured and he revealed the names of others plotters. They were captured and executed.

After surviving to the plot, King James I ordered to all English people to burn a burn a bonfire on November 5th. And nowadays continue celebrating it.

On the 400th anniversary of the plot, some scientists make a simulation with the same amount of gunpowder. When they exploded it they noticed that the explosion was so powerful that everyone within one hundred metres of it would have been killed, including the King James I. So maybe a Catholic monarch would be put on the English Throne, as Catholics Plotters wanted.

ZURICH BECAUSE CHANGE HAPPENZ

MANX CAT

Manx Cat is a peculiar cat. It is from Isle of Man and it hasn’t got tail. But today all the tail-less cats are called Manx. They have got a genetic mutation very common on the Island.
“Folk beliefs claim the Manx cats came from the Spanish Armada; a ship foundered on the cliffs at Spanish Head on the coast of the Isle of Man. According to legend, the cats on the ship swam ashore and became an established breed. Legend has it that the cats originally went onboard the Spanish ship in the Far East.”
Nowadays, white Manx cats are very very rare. In some cases, white Manx cats may be worth well over $4,000.

BRITISH TOPICS (3) (SYMBOLS)

In the world there are many symbols. In Spain we have the Legion’s goat, in US Uncle Sam, but what about British?
The bulldog symbolises britishness. Sometimes bulldogs are associated to Winston Churchill, because he had one as pet.
Britannia is the female personification for Great Britain. Britannia is the name written in Latin.
John Bull is the person who symbolizes the typical conservative British personality. It is like Uncle Sam in the US. It is not a real man. It is a middle aged man, wearing the Union Jack as a waistcoat (chaleco).
Continuing with clothes, the costume that has been worn for more than five hundred years is the Morris dancing costume. By the way, if you look with attention you can find some movements like Vasque Countrys traditional dances.

Everyone knows that British like having tea at 5 o´clock in that afternoon, but we have to learn many others activities they like.
They like playing scrabble and cricket too, but I thing it is so boring...
They like eating fish and chips. By the way, the best “Fish and chips” in all London City is near the Tower of London. They think that the best and the most important meal of the day is the breakfast, so they have a complete dish of meat, eggs… They only take a break for lunch. But if you go to London you Hill see that there are people eating in Burger Kings and similar fast food restaurant in every moment.
They like moving by double decker bus (Mancunians travel by tram, there isn’t any underground in Manchester.)

BRITISH TOPICS (1)

I am going to talk about British topics and British lifestyle. I think the most famous topic is about doing queues for just everything, in the bus stations, in the supermarket. They like queueing and you can be in danger if you jump the queue. And be careful, in rush hours you have to move faster than ever if you want not to have any problems.
In the U.K. used to be cold, that was we thought, but we have know that nowadays a lot of people die because it is impossible to pay the VAT of the heating and the electrical bill.
I have always thought that London was a foggy city. It isn’t true. I ‘ve been there and it isn’t foggy. But unfortunately we can say that London is becoming a smoggy city. Many cities have air pollution or rivers contamination, and although London is a super big city it has to care its environment too.
By the other hand, they like animals, British still continue hunting fox. Many hunters, many dogs, just one fox. What a pity!
I know that in Spain we unfortunately have the bull fighting but maybe in the future it will be forbidden.
I prefer looking fox puppies to kill them.

THE UK PARLIAMENT:

It is one of the oldest European parliament. There are many diferent parliaments in the world that work like this.

All the building is known as: "Houses of the Parliament", and it has got two big towers. The tallest, with a clock is called: "Big Ben". But few people knows that this name was given becouse the man who directed the construction was Benjamin Hall, and that man put inside the tower a big bell. By the way, if you can see a light on the top of this tower in the night, that means that there is a night meeting in the parliament.
The name of the smaller tower is Victoria Tower, and they built it two years later, in 1860, so you can easily imagine that The Big Ben was built in 1858.

You can find more than thousand chambers in the Houses of the Parliament.

But the really important thing is that there are, House of the Commons and House of Lords inside it too.

MICHAEL PORTILLO

I want to know more information about this politicián becouse I like the idea of a famous person stepping into unknow's shoes. So I have gone to wikipedia web and here there is some information:
He is 57 years old. He is politician and journalist too and he admires Margaret Tatcher.
His father was an exiled Spanish republican, his name was Luis Gabriel Portillo.
When Michael was eight years old, he appeared in a TV spot of blackcurrant (grosella) drink.
Maybe this is the reason why he is broadcaster (presentador-locutor) too.
He joined the Conservative Party (partido) in 1976.
He is married with Carolyn Eadie but they haven't got children.
From 1984 to 1997 he has being working as a member of the Parliament and he has retained the Enfield Southgate seat (escaño) until he lost it in 1997.
In 1997 elections Tony Blair(Labourist) became Prime Minister,so John Mayor (The Prime Minister elected after Margaret Tatcher both of them Conservatives)lost his popular support(apoyo)and elections too. Then there have been two Prime Ministers more. Gordon Brown (Labourist as Tony Blair) and now David Cameron (Labourist).
Going back about what I was saying (volviendo a lo que decía) about Michael Portillo, I have to say that in November 1999, Michael returned to Parliament, but just in 2005 he retired from politic activities.
He has been appearing in BBC2 since 2003 making very diferent programs about railways, Spanish wildlife, social matters... He makes many charitable and voluntary activities too.

IN THE REAL WORLD

Sometimes we forget the world around us and we act like a shy jellyfish, going everywhere using waves, floating, getting nowhere. Sometimes we forget people around us. Im not speaking about hunger in Nigeria or far away. I'm speaking about people close to you, in your neighborhood, in your community.
Years ago, Michael Portillo went to a BBC2 TV programe and step into Jenny Miner's shoes. Jenny Miner is a woman who has four children, two jobs and she is trying to turn over a new leaf with her family. The politician worked at a supermarket and as a educational assistant. Then he tried to manage looking after Jenny's children. I suppose this experience was a real eye-opener for Michael. We can't forget that if a politician wins an elections is becouse people wanted so. And if you want to do a good job as a politician, you have to know people's problems.

I would like to watch this programme here in Spain. I think it would be interesting.

I really didn´t know nothing about Shakers. But we read a text.
They are living in America, in The Sabbathda Lake Shaker Village in Maine, just in the north east of United States.
As you can wath in the video they still live like Jesuchrist did. They are like Amish, but this affirmation is not true. They are different. They are a community, a religious community. They live in a particular space, they have a village for themselves.
They live as Christ did, so they have a celibate life, where male and female members have diferent places to live, to work, to pray...
They live confessing their sins and being pacifists.
Shaker community has a communal life, so the most important thing for them is to remember that community steals your independence. There was a clearly example in the text. If you want to do something but the community needs you doing another thing, you have to give up (renunciar) and do community's requirements. Maybe that is the reason why today community has only four members.

FIGS AND SNAILS

I have to write about something. Our teacher said we have free topic and that's the most awful things that can happens. I prefer when the topic is clearly-defined as: "Second World War" or "Economic crisis", "Life in others planets?"...
But "Free topic" means that you can choose the topic between thousands and thousands posibilities.
We have been without working, on holidays, and I have gone to a very little town in the country side. When I go for a walk, my camera ever comes with me. And I am going to try explaining the topic I have chose: "FIGS AND SNAILS".
Someone can think that it is not a suitable topic, but here I am.
Maybe the best thing to do would be writting about Dinosaurs, Teaching or Space; I have more experience doing that, but I'm going to try it.
Figs are fruit. But it is not true. Figs are fig trees flowers. You can see a pair of figs in the fig tree. Inside the fig, there are more than thousand seeds. It is very improbable to grown another fig tree from a fig so the inteligent nature puts many seeds inside it to improve the posibilities.
First, figs are green, we can't eat them yet. When you take it from the tree, a white sticky liquid will appear in your hand. So please, don't put the fig in your mouth, or your lips will be sticky too.
When figs are still in the fig tree, some birds eat them. You can see in the photo an eaten fig.

But don't worry, it is an strategy. When a bird eats a fig, it eats the food around the seed, and seeds too. When this bird shits, seeds are inside the shit and they will have a wonderful organic food to grow and to become in a fig tree.
Figs are very sweet fruit and I like them to much, so you can see my harvest. (cosecha)But I have a problem, I like snails too. There are diferent types of snails. Winkles (Bígaros)live in the seaside, on the rocks, in salty water. I like them too... But I want to write about snails, snails and slugs (babosa-limaco) are similar. Slugs haven't got shell, they are stikier than superglue and they are always in wild boars (jabalí) menu. Here you can see a slug having dinner.There are two diferent snails. On one hand, we have small snails. You can't eat them, but in the South of Spain can be added to a cold drink called Mosto. Its a bite disgusting, but I think that it's like drinking a Mexican licour with a lizard inside the bottle, or like a Chinese drink with snakes inside. You can like it or not. In the photo, you can see a mosto snail. They are always small.And at last, we have the king of snails. Brown one. There is a saying (dicho) that you can take snails in months with an "r" inside their names, but the best moment to do it is in
April. Now, snails are hiding in the ground, laying eggs, in a nest (nido). You can see it in the photo.I like too much this photo, it's my favorite. In April you would be able to take some snails, to clean them with vinegar and salt and cook them. You can cook them with some tomato sauce, peppers...
So snail be carefull, we will be watching you.

A FILM AND A SONG

The title of the song is LUKA. The singer is Suzanne Vega. It is supossed to be an easy understandable song, that is the reason of being the first song in the blog.

If you watch the song you can read lyrics and you can sing it too. I have just done when I insert in the blog, don´t worry about neighbours, they know I'm as crazy as a hatter. By the why, I didn't know what CLUMSY was, so I used Wordreference web (you can hear the pronuntiation too) to discover it. Clumsy person is a person who brokes everything just touching it, who fall down to the ground when he is going upstairs, who brreaks everything... In spanish means "torpe".

In my opinion, there is a verb "argue" that is quite difficult for me to pronounce. It is something like: "argui". "Don't argue with me." Means "No me discutas."

"Clash of the Titans" is the last film I have watched. The main character is the same of "Avatar". The film is about the trip of Perseus, who is a son of Zeus. He wants to stop the most powerfull devil titan, showing him the dead head of Medusa. I liked it. I like action films, adventure films and I like Greek Mitology too, so was perfect for me.

INTERESTING

To have goldfish memomy means that you memory is like a sieve, that you have bad memory. To say the opposite, to have a good memory, sometimes we use a elephant as example, but poor elephant...
When the elephant was joung, newborn, or just with some days of life, owner tied the elephant up to a stake in the ground. The elephant tried to go, but it couldn't. When the elephant is adult and it is very strong, it doesn't try to scape becouse it remembers that when it was joung it couldn't do.

LIARS: HOW TO SPOT THEM.

The text we have read is about liars, I remembered that there is a TV serie called "Lie to me" where the main character Tim Roth (modern "Apes Planet") spots liars just looking at their faces, their muscles movement... Here in Spain we are just waiting for the second season in Antena 3.

In the video, you can see a man that had written the book "What everybody is saying", giving us some advices. Now we have to be careful, maybe someone has to change the Curriculum Vitae. By the way, remenber the quotes: "The mouth may lie but the face tells the truth" or "Liars need to have a good memories".

I have a little problem, sometimes I get lie and lie down mixed. I know that first means to tell something that is not true, and second one means to put your body on the floor, on the bed... But I have a memory like a sieve, you know...
